Arts & Craft Newsletter - Campbell Town Tasmania - August 2024

Edition 5 | August 2024
From the editor:
Our Campbell Town Art & Craft Group explored crochet, bird felting, jewellery making and Nalbinding last month. Thank you to everyone who led our groups and shared their skills with us. There are a few pics from some of our activities below.
During the recent school holidays, I welcomed some children and adults into my studio to play with clay. Although we had a monster theme some chose to create bowls and one of our young attendees took on the challenge of making a creepy walking hand – similar to ‘Thing’ from The Addams Family. It was a difficult subject – as painting, drawing or sculpting hands tends to be, however young J did a wonderful job. Aside from that it was a monster’s dream – with horns, spikes, multi-eyes, sharp teeth and scary faces entertaining our young boys! Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and I look forward to do another school holiday activity in October.
What have you been working on lately? We’ll be having a ‘show ‘n tell’ session on Tuesday 13th August – where you are very welcome to bring something to share and show us about your interests and inspirations. New community members are always very welcome.
In this newsletter I am putting a call out for Tasmanians to enter into our first (hopefully of many) group exhibition in Campbell Town. The theme of the exhibition is called MIDLANDS!! This will launch in the town later in November. More details are below and I hope you will consider entering.
Happy creating,
Lee-Anne Peters

Jewellery Making – 16 July

Nålbinding – 27 July
I personally enjoyed learning how to Nålbind and I’m exploring how to make a scarf using this technique.
As someone who struggled to pick up crochet earlier last month and who doesn’t knit, I think Nålbinding might be something that I understand better.
I’ve practiced making a deep loop thing (see pic below) :D, and how to go back and forth.
I’ll let you know how I go with a scarf… although it won’t happen quickly… stay tuned!!

I will be at the Heritage & Bullock Festival at the Gay St Hall, Oatlands on Saturday 10 & 11 August.
I’ll have a big pile of clay where visitors can pluck a bit out and make a little something.
Have the experience of playing and making with clay, and leave your piece behind for others to admire over the weekend, or take it with you (unfired) for a small charge.
I’ll also be demonstrating sculpturing, and will have a few of my ceramic items available for sale. If you’re in the area please stop by and say HI 😊

Heritage & Bullock Festival Oatlands
Oatlands loves a parade - and our biggest weekend of the year has two! The Oatlands Heritage and Bullock Festival is traditionally held on the coldest weekend of the year (coincidence?). This year, rug up and head along the Midland Highway on August 10 and 11.
The main parade, beginning at 10.30am both days, includes steam engines, horse or goat drawn carts, dancers, historically inspired dressed locals and the lumbering giants, the bullock team.
Attractions include demonstrations of heritage trades and crafts, displays of historical costume, quilts and market stalls, and lots of corset-supported big skirts and fancy headwear. Expect to see: ceramics, leather, calligraphy, blacksmithing, pickles, food stalls and mulled drinks, animals and kids and crinolines.
At the Weaver's Cottages Studios, Johnny Mackay will be making chairs in the front courtyard. In the Parlour we will be demonstrating fibre crafts using heritage skills - fleece processing, spinning, weaving, knitting and crochet.
Come by and say hello!
