Garden Wizard Revival

During my last months (of nine months) of adult education ceramic classes in 2015, I made my first 'Garden Wizard'. At the time though I saw him as more of a tree man.

My LOVE for sculpting faces and tree-like shapes began. I always LOVED observing the expressions in faces, and same with the movements and growth of trees.

Not too long after, I began creating more, and these became 'dubbed' 'Garden Wizards' - my version of a garden gnome. For a year or so around 2016, I made over 150 of them - all numbered and named.

Then my focus shifted into other forms.

Several years later (April 2020) - during the Corona virus pandemic, and a few weeks into a worldwide home-bound isolation, I was inspired to revive my 'Garden Wizards' - with a 'Wizard Name Game' on my Lee-Anne Peters Facebook page.

This has sparked a revival of brand new 'Garden Wizards'. The main difference between the older Wizards and the new ones are the clay and fire temperature. Previously, my old kiln only fired to earthenware temps, and my new kiln fires to high-fire. So the new Wizards are made from stoneware so will be more durable and stronger - although still breakable - as they are ceramic.

Many of the new 'Garden Wizards' have rimmed hats. This adds to their unique character. All Wizards are numbered and named underneath on the inside.

UPDATE: 12 May 2020:

All 31 (plus 2 x extra) Garden Wizards have been made and have had their first of two kiln firings. They now await to be glazed and have their final glaze firing over the coming days. All Wizards should be ready by Mon 18 May (tbc).
