Sculpture - Bonsai
handmade with stoneware + kintsugi repair
In 2019 I re-created my Bonsai charcoal drawing (2010) into a sculpture. It was successful and has found its new home.
This year, in celebration of Temple of Balance’s 20th birthday, I thought I would attempt it again. The first time I was exploring with porcelain, and this second time I used stoneware clay.
It came together incredibly easily when I was making it, and then when I was just finishing the final touches it came apart just below the ‘shoulders’. I managed to reattach successfully and all was well.
That was until it went up to 1260*C and it started to fold in that weaker area. This warping pulled the face right down and so I made the decision to grind the sculpture off at this point and reattach using the Kintsugi technique – which I learned in 2023.
Kintsugi comes out of Japan, and is the process of sacredly mending broken pottery with veins of gold. These can be seen as a symbol of renewal and beauty to be found within the scars that we all hold within us.
This sculpture is a powerful symbol of growth, stamina, focus, but also represents the healing of our wounds and allowing our scars to become a gift.

Glaze colour: mushroom and silvery blue glaze in base. Clear glaze on face, rest underglaze colours, and no glaze.
